This official NASA portrait of Bill Anders was taken in 1967, almost four years after his selection and just over a year before his flight on Apollo 8.
As back-up pilot for Gemini 11, Anders underwent EVA training aboard a modified KC-135 aircraft, experiencing short bursts of weightlessness during parabolic flights. He is wearing a spacesuit and Extravehicular Life Support System (ELSS) chest pack.
Standing outside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the Apollo 8 crew (l to r, Lovell, Anders, Borman) pause for a photo opportunity as their Saturn V rocket begins its slow journey to the launch pad.
Apollo 8 LM Pilot Anders adjusts his helmet as he and his colleagues suit up for the trip to the launch pad at the start of the mission.
Anders and his family are photographed during a parade through Houston, Texas, at the end of the historic Apollo 8 flight.
