A medical doctor and former military pilot, Norman Thagard holds the distinction of becoming the first American astronaut to be launched into space on a foreign space vehicle. On 14 March 1995 he was launched aboard Soyuz TM-21 with two Russian Cosmonauts for a four month mission on the Mir space station. During the mission he completed a programme of 28 experiments as part of the Mir-18 expedition before returning to Earth on 7 July aboard the space shuttle Atlantis which had a few days earlier became the first US shuttle to dock to Russian station.
