ASTRONOMY FROM MANNED SPACECRAFT
For thousands of years, humans have gazed at the stars from our planet and wondered what lay in the heavens? With the invention of the telescope, it was possible for professional observers to record the movement of planets and the mysteries of deep space. Over the last few centuries, astronomers have changed our understanding of our solar system and its place in the universe. It was only a matter of time before the first professional astronomers place instruments and payloads on satellites and spacecraft allowing clearer observations from able our atmosphere. This presentation explains how astronomy has been adapted to manned spaceflight operations to supplement that conducted from robotic vehicles and ground-based observations. Astronomy from a manned spacecraft has both benefits and difficulties which are explained during the presentation, revealing the advantages and setbacks of conducting astronomical research by a human crew.
