A CENTURY IN THE MAKING, THE EVOLUTION OF ISS
There is a new bright star in the sky, one that is man-made. With sunlight reflecting off the solar arrays, the International Space Station regularly passes over inhabited areas of Earth and appears a bright fast moving star. Constructed by a global team of 16 nations between 1998 - 2011 the station is a research center for developing new technologies and systems for an extended duration in space, hopefully supporting future flights to the moon and Mars. The story of ISS is extensive and entwined with the twists and turns of politics, engineering, military and international involvement and changes of direction. In this presentation, Dave explains how the idea of a station in space evolved from pages of science fiction over 100 years ago into the largest international construction project in history. The major milestones of assembly, activities and achievements are presented offering a fascinating insight into a complex programme.
