On October 20, 1995 European astronaut Thomas Reiter, on his first spaceflight became the first German to walk in space, during a long duration mission on the Soviet space station Mir. Just over a decade after he returned from that mission, Reiter was again living in space on a second long duration mission, this time on-board the International Space Station. Concurrent to his assignments with the European Space Agency (ESA) Reiter retained his commission in the Germany Air Force, logging over 2300 hours flying time in more than 15 types of military combat aircraft and in March 2009 he was promoted to Brigadier General.
