Andrian Nikolayev was one of the first 20 cosmonauts selected in 1960. He completed two of the longest spaceflights in the early years of the programme, setting new endurance records both times. In 1962, he flew a 4-day solo flight in Vostok 3, and in 1970, he completed an 18-day flight aboard Soyuz 9 with Vitaly Sevestyanov.
