Barbara Morgan, NASA’s first ‘educator astronaut’, began her career as an elementary school teacher before being selected with Christa McAuliffe in July 1985 as Teacher-In-Space candidates. Barbara trained as McAuliffe’s back up for the STS-51L mission and following the loss of Challenger in January 1986, she returned to teaching whist continuing her links with the NASA Education Division. In 1998 she was selected for NASA astronaut training and completed a two year course to qualify as a Mission Specialist. Following several technical assignments within the astronaut office she finally reached orbit in August 2007 as a crew-member on STS-118. The 22nd flight to the International Space Station delivered a new truss element as well as supplies and spares to the orbital outpost.
