Bruce Melnick holds the distinction of becoming the first representative of the US Coast Guard to be selected for NASA astronaut training and to fly into space. In a five year career at NASA Melnick flew two missions on the Space Shuttle logging over 300 hours in space. STS-41 in 1990 deployed the Ulysses spacecraft on a mission to study the Sun. STS-49 in 1992 was the maiden flight of OV-105 Endeavour on a mission to recover and re-boost the Intelsat VI satellite.
