FIRST STEPS ON A NEW PLANT
The quest for the red planet Mars has long enticed humans for generations. We often say we will go there, but exactly when and how still eludes us. We have sent robotic spacecraft to Mars for the past 50 years, with varying degrees of success, so why send humans? This presentation discusses what the first landing crew may be challenged with once they finally get there. When and how is not address in depth, that is for future generations to decide instead, this presentation looks at what the crew will try to accomplish and why combining both manned and automated exploration systems on an International expedition may be the way to achieve our first landing on another planet. This presentation is based on a 2005 book Marswalk One: First Steps on a New Planet written by Dave, Andy salmon and Mike Shayler.
