INTO THE STRATOSPHERE
HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOON FLIGHTS
In the quest for space, early experiments and investigations were achieved in high-altitude manned balloon flights into the upper reaches of the stratosphere. This presentation recalls the efforts of astronauts to obtain scientific data and flight experience in balloon flight programme carried out during the 1930s and 1960s and how these studies helped create a manned space programme in both the United States of America and the Soviet Union. Dave also gives details of high altitude parachute jumps which provide further biomedical information as well as dramatic news coverage.
