A sequence of flight crew changes allowed Fred Haise to be considered for an early lunar landing mission, but those same changes also placed him on the crew assigned to Apollo 13. Remembered for the lunar landing mission that had to aborted two days out from Earth due to an in-flight explosion of the number 2 oxygen tank in the service module Apollo 13 was deemed a successful failure in that though the primary goal of landing on the moon was not achieved a dramatic recovery of the three astronauts captured the attention of the world and forever wrote the mission into one of the highlights of the golden years of NASA.
