Donn Eisele was Command Module Pilot for Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission which for over ten days in October 1968 man-rated the Command and Service Module in preparation for lunar missions and Earth orbital operations. Unfortunately he did not return to space despite serving as back up CMP for Apollo 10 making him eligible for assignment to a later lunar landing crew, possible as commander. Described as the most methodical and retro respective of the Apollo 7 astronauts he held the role of navigator was responsible for evaluating the guidance and navigation system of the spacecraft.
