CHRISTMAS AROUND THE MOON
THE STORY OF APOLLO 8
During December 1968 three American astronauts spent their Christmas around the moon. The mission of Apollo 8 was a milestone in space exploration. For the first time, man had left the vicinity of low Earth orbit and travelled out across a quarter of a million miles through the void of space. This risky mission tested the integrity and capability of the main Apollo spacecraft before committing it to support a manned lunar landing mission. This presentation recalls the historic flight of Apollo 8, the expected but absent challenge offered by the Soviets and the International reactions to the mission at the time. The impact of the images of Earth floating in space became a lasting impact of the fragile environment we all live in.
