In December 1972 Gene Cernan became the eleventh man to step onto the surface moon and the twelfth and last man to leave his boot prints there. This is a distinction he did not expect to hold 35 years after commanding the Apollo 17 mission that completed America’s first manned lunar exploration programme. With a return to the moon being planned over the next decade the historic event of the thirteenth person to step onto the surface will hopefully occur before the 50th anniversary of the Last Apollo in December 2022.
