Vance Brand is one of only six NASA astronauts who flew on an Apollo spacecraft and remained at NASA to fly on the Space Shuttle. He was the Command Module Pilot on the final Apollo crew who docked with a Soviet Soyuz in July 1975, the first international manned space mission. After commanding three shuttle missions between 1982 and 1990 he served in a management role completing a 42 year career at NASA. Had the Apollo lunar programme progressed as planned he could have flown around the Moon on Apollo 18 but supported the Skylab space station programme instead.
