Four months after the success of Apollo 11, the second manned lunar landing mission was targeted for a region on the Ocean of Storms, near the landing site of the unmanned Surveyor III spacecraft. Though Apollo 11 landed successfully and safely, the straying off target was embarrassing. Therefore Apollo 12 was to attempt a pinpoint landing which would demonstrate the ability to land near more challenging targets on future missions. There would also be two periods of surface exploration, one to collect a contingency sample and deploy the first expanded surface experiment package and the second for extend geological investigations and visiting Surveyor III which had landed on the moon in 1967.
