On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong finally achieved the age old dream of stepping onto the surface of the moon claiming a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind. This achievement was made during the mission of Apollo 11, fulfilling the challenge of Present John F. Kennedy eight years before of placing am an on the moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. Accompanying mission commander Armstrong onto the surface was Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, whilst Command Module Pilot Mike Collins remained in lunar orbit. This was not only a milestone in space exploration but also in human history, in which mankind moved from another Earth and out into the solar system exploring another celestial body.
